I watched this movie back in college when I took a film class. It’s an old film, in black and white, and I don’t remember which language it was in, but it was definitely not English.
The plot is about this Professor who by chance meets this woman, who is a dancer (a stripper?)… may be they travelled? May be they are part of the circus? I’m not sure.
Anyway, the two meet, fall in love, etc. But some of his students finds out, spreads the rumor, whereby the professor is fired.
The professor, starts living with the woman and her companions. At first, they are all happy. But soon after, we see that the professor is unable to adjust to his new life, unable to find any kind of employment, and finds himself constantly at odds with everyone.
Eventually, he degenerates into an alcoholic, and starts working as a clown as part of the performances.
One of the Professor’s old students, shows up, and he’s all handsome and whatever. The student (who had feelings for the woman when he was young) starts making advances to the woman. The Professor flips out, and starts beating the woman. I guess other people try to stop him.
Later, we see the professor beaten to a pulp, and one of the companions passby, and say something along the lines of “Once you were a great professor, and look at what you’ve degenerated to now, all for a woman?”
The movie ends with the professor crawling to some alley, and where he passes out…
The details are a bit hazy… so I could’ve mixed up a few things here and there.
